VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT
Handicap International Federation (HI) is an independent and impartial aid organization, created in 1982, working across 63 countries. HI works alongside the vulnerable populations, whatever the context, taking action to respond to their essential needs, improve their living conditions and promote respect for their dignity and fundamental rights. Present in Nepal since 2000, HI works through a network of local partner organizations in the area of health and physical rehabilitation, inclusive education and resilience including emergency response to improve the living conditions and involvement of the most vulnerable populations in Nepal.
HI is planning to conduct a research project entitled "Community based solutions for economic resilience – Building on local knowledge and know how to respond to climate change challenges" in Karnali Province. HI Nepal invites applications for the short-term consultancy for the following position:
1. TRANSLATOR – 1 position
Terms & Conditions: Short-term consultancy (10-15 days) tentatively from end of Jan till mid of Feb 2025
Location: Jajarkot, Nepal
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Accompany the field mission tasked with identifying practices, knowledge and know-how in climate change resilience in vulnerable communities in Nepal.
More specifically, the Translator will be responsible for:
- Translate questionnaires and interview guides
- Facilitate community discussions and take consolidated and accurate notes of discussions and interviews conducted
- Interpret during interactions with local communities (especially focus groups and semi-structured interviews)
- Assist the research team in understanding cultural contexts.
- Contribute to the analysis of linguistic and cultural data
SKILLS REQUIRED
Language skills:
- Perfect command of the local language(s)/dialect(s) planned for this study and excellent command of English or French.
Technical skills:
- Computer skills (Word and Excel)
- Proficiency in computer-assisted translation tools
Specific knowledge:
- In-depth understanding of Nepal’s culture and customs
- Familiarity with community-based research methods and the importance of community involvement
- Knowledge of local social and cultural issues
- Sensitivity to the issues of - Sensitivity to gender and inclusion issues
- Ability to adapt to people with different levels of disability.
Skills in inclusion and disability:
- Awareness of disability and inclusion issues in the Nepalese context.
- Ability to adapt methods to Persons with Disabilities
- Knowledge of specific disability-related vocabulary in Nepali and English
- Experience in translating documents related to inclusion and disability would be an asset.
- Ability to advise the research team on accessibility and inclusion issues in the research process.
EDUCATION
Education and experience:
- Degree in translation, linguistics, or related field (Master's level recommended),
- At least 5 years' experience in translation and interpreting, ideally in a research and community-based context.
SKILLS
Personal skills:
- Excellent intercultural communication skills
- Ability to adapt to different community contexts
- Sensitivity to cultural and linguistic nuances
- Neutrality and objectivity in translation
Additional skills:
- Ability to work in sometimes difficult field conditions
- Flexibility to adapt to schedules and frequent travel
- Sensitivity to ethical issues related to community-based research
2. COMMUNITY MOBILIZER – 2 positions ( 1 Male; 1 Female)
Terms & Conditions: Short-term consultancy (10-15 days) tentatively from end of Jan till mid of Feb 2025
Location: Jajarkot, Nepal
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Accompany field mission to identify climate change resilience practices, knowledge and know-how in vulnerable communities in Nepal.
More particularly, the Community Mobilizer will be in charge of:
- Facilitating community discussions and take consolidated and accurate notes of discussions and interviews conducted.
- Transcribing all discussions in local and English languages.
- Assisting research team in understanding cultural contexts.
- Contributing to the analysis of linguistic and cultural data.
SKILLS REQUIRED
Community facilitation skills:
- Experience in facilitating group discussions and participatory processes
- Ability to encourage the inclusion of all social groups, especially the most marginalized
- Ability to manage conflict
- Familiarity with participatory risk assessment tools
Analytical skills:
- Ability to analyze local risks and community vulnerabilities
- Ability to synthesize information gathered during group discussions
Planning and coordination skills:
- Ability to plan and organize community activities
- Ability to coordinate with local authorities and other stakeholders
Communication skills:
- Excellent oral and written communication skills in Nepali and English
- Ability to popularize economic resilience concepts
Expertise in inclusion and disability:
- Sensitivity to disability and inclusion issues in the Nepalese contexts
- Experience or understanding of the issue of integrating people with disabilities into community resilience processes
- Ability to adapt community mobilization methods to ensure the inclusion of all groups, including people with disabilities
Language skills:
- Fluency in English or French and relevant local languages in Nepal
- Ability to communicate effectively with diverse groups
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Degree in social sciences, community development or related field
- At least 5 years' proven experience in community mobilization - In-depth knowledge of local contexts in Nepal
Thorough understanding of community-based disaster risk management and resilience principles
SKILLS
Cultural sensitivity:
- Understanding of local social and cultural dynamics
- Ability to adapt approaches to the specific contexts of Nepal
Personal qualities:
- Empathy and active listening skills
- Flexibility and adaptability to field conditions
