Voice of Children (VOC) is a non-profit, non-governmental organization established on November 2000 with a mission to contribute for the improvement of the living condition of the Street Children and their families in Nepal. The organization mainly focuses on those children, who suffer from various kinds of problems such as sexual abuse, harassment and other forms of violence and exploitation in the street and strives to re-establish them in the society with special attention to their needs and rights. Assistance in different ways and through different programs focused on the enhancement of the physical, mental, social and financial condition is catered to the needy street children and their families in order to reshape their lives.

CLARISSA Project Brief Information: 

VoC is implementing UK AID funded CLARISSA project to generate a strong evidence base and innovative solutions to address the worst forms of child labour (WFCL) in Nepal. CLARISSA is a consortium partnership programme led by the Institute of Development Studies (IDS) and implemented in partnership with Terre des hommes, Child Hope UK and Consortium for Street Children to generate a strong evidence base on, and innovative solutions to, the worst forms of child labour (WFCL) in Bangladesh and Nepal. The programme focuses on surfacing key drivers of the worst forms of child labour and developing interventions to counteract them. The primary beneficiaries of the programme are children in the WFCL and those who are vulnerable to being drawn into it. The families of these children will benefit from greater resilience to shocks, better options for their children’s safe and healthy future and less intra-family stress and conflict. 

The consortium funded by UK Aid led by the Institute of Development Studies (IDS) and other consortium partners are (in alphabetical order):

  • ChildHope UK
  • Consortium for Street Children 
  • Terre des homes

Overall purpose of the Job

A term of Reference (ToR) intends to solicit a consultancy that will support to translate Nepali stories to English. This will also include conducting meetings with research team members to finalise life stories.

Position: Translator (Nepali to English)

Duration: Four/Five Months

The duration of work will be for four/five months starting from period of August-November/December 2021. The consultancy agreement may be extended for a further period at the discretion of management in writing with mutual consent. 

Scope of work

Scope of work shall be as listed below but not necessarily limited to the following;

  • Translate 50 to 80 life stories of children working in WFCL from Nepali to English language. 
  • Other appropriate duties as assigned by the Senior Participatory Action Researcher in direct supervision of Country Coordinator. 

Key Deliverables 

The expected outcome from the consultant shall be as listed below but not necessarily limited to the following;

  • Ensure that translations are accurate and information are not distorted. The consultant will also pay close attention proper use of terminologies.
  • The stories will be translated based on the Consistency Checklist provided by CLARISSA. The consultant shall adhere to the checklist.
  • Upon receiving the feedback, the consultant will be responsible for incorporating it to develop final translated stories. All the translated stories must be high quality English.
  • The consultant shall submit life stories for review and comments, and revise them until approved by CLARISSA team members.
  • Meet with CLARISSA team to discuss on the translation of life stories. 

Essential skills and experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in social works, development studies, public health, demography and/or other related social science discipline.
  • Excellent translation skills in English and Nepali.
  • Prior experience of working in research studies including data collection, coding and analysis, report writing.
  • Familiar with qualitative research methodologies
  • Experience and knowledge on children issues. 

Desirable skills and experience

  • Familiar with qualitative research. 
  • Familiar with data protection requirements and other ethical perspective of research

Terms of Payment 

  • As per VOC standard practice, which is per story completion basis
