Women Make Films Initiative

Background

YUWA is a youth-led organization that aims to promote youth participation, advocacy, and leadership. As part of our commitment to advancing gender equality and empowering young women, YUWA seeks to implement the third "Women Make Films" initiative. This initiative focuses on equipping aspiring women filmmakers with the skills and resources needed to tell compelling stories through a gender lens. It also aims to challenge harmful stereotypes, promote inclusivity, and amplify the voices of young women in Nepal.

This Women Make Film initiative is a part of a larger Y-SPARCK project and stems from YUWA’s strategic partnership with Plan International Nepal, whose vision is to create inclusive, just and safe society for girls, adolescents and young women. Plan International Nepal is an independent development and humanitarian organization that advances rights of girls, adolescents and young women, children’s rights and equality for girls. Plan International Nepal believes in the power and potential of every child. Plan International Nepal has been working since 1978, partnering with communities and organizations to implement programs that align with their global strategy "All Girls Standing Strong, Creating Global Change".

As this is the third Women Make Films by Plan International Nepal, the production must align with Plan International Nepal’s branding requirements to ensure consistency in presentation and messaging. At the same time, we plan to leverage YUWA’s existing branding to maintain coherence with our organizational identity. To provide further clarity and insight, we also draw on research published by Plan International Nepal, such as their report Representations of Women and Girls in Nepal’s Cinema (accessible at this link), which underscores the significance of empowering girls and women through creative expression.

YUWA is one of Plan International Nepal’s strategic partners and shares similar objectives, we believe in fostering an inclusive society where women and marginalized communities are empowered to participate actively in leadership, decision-making, and social change. As a youthled organization, YUWA recognizes the transformative potential of challenging stereotypes and breaking traditional norms that confine women and minorities. YUWA in partnership with Plan International Nepal strongly advocates for collective efforts of Civil society organizations to bring a greater change and impact in society.

Until We Are All Equal

The "Women Make Films" initiative began as part of the Girls Get Equal campaign activity of Plan International Nepal and is supported by research findings from "Representations of Women and Girls in Nepal’s Cinema".

This initiative now integrates a climate justice lens, emphasizing the disproportionate impacts of climate change on girls and young women in Nepal. These videos will serve as key materials for an upcoming national campaign on climate adaptation through a gender lens, showcasing how climate impacts exacerbate existing gender inequalities. By aligning with the overarching goals of Plan International Nepal's global campaign and YUWA’s advocacy priorities, this initiative aims to amplify the voices of young women and support a more equitable and sustainable future. Key themes that women make films initiative shall include:

  • Ending harmful social norms: Reducing violence against girls and women and tackling discriminatory attitudes and practices to make communities free of child marriage, child trafficking and child labor.
  • Access to Education: Ensuring that girls and women have equal access to education, which is crucial for their empowerment and societal development.
  • Economic Empowerment: Supporting women’s participation in the economy by closing the gender wage gap and increasing opportunities for women in leadership roles and decision-making.
  • Health and Reproductive Rights: Advocating for access to comprehensive sexual and reproductive health services and ensuring that women can make decisions about their bodies.
  • Resilience: Strengthening resilience of communities to natural disasters.

The "Women Make Films" initiative will integrate a climate justice lens, emphasizing the disproportionate impacts of climate change on girls and young women in Nepal.
