Background:
Heifer Project International Nepal (HPIN) in collaboration with Heifer Korea, Department of Livestock Services (DLS), National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) and Nepal Agricultural Research Council (NARC) is implementing a signature program “Milky Way-Transforming Dairy Sector of Nepal”. The overall goal of the Milky Way Signature Program is to support 500,000 dairy farm families in their pathway to achieve living income. It has envisioned three interlinked pathways to achieve the goal.
Pathway 1 being led by HPIN and supported by DLS is working to establish a MDV in Sindhuli as a “Center of Excellence and Learning” reinforcing the local dairy sector to make it more efficient, more profitable for smallholder dairy producers and more respectful of the environment. It will also serve as resource center for high genetic worth Holstein Frisian (HF) dairy cattle and knowledge and technologies.
Objectives:
The core objective of producing the "MDV Flip Chart" as an extension material is to scale up the good practices of dairy animal farming being adopted at MDV across the dairy pocket areas nationwide.
Scope of Work:
The flip chart "MDV, Sindhuli" needs to be illustrative in the form of sketch, text, table, and photographs etc. highlighting the good practices adopted in the MDV, Sindhuli. The Flip chart will be approximately 50 pages printed in A4 size paper in both sides.
The scope of work for this assignment will be as follows:
- Visit and interact with Heifer team at country office and develop a conceptual framework.
- Visit MDV and interact with Heifer field staff to understand Model Dairy Village and capture relevant photographs from MDV and periphery, interact with farmers and other stakeholders in the field to collect relevant information.
- Prepare table of contents and script for the flip chart that should cover but not limited to the following
- Good Dairy Husbandry Practices [housing, feeding, breeding, health, stress management etc.] D
- Dairy animal housing- design and layout of sheds, space requirement, orientation, floor, manure and urine management, essential farm equipment etc.
- Breeding management- Ideal breeding age and weight, heat detection, timing for insemination, managing reproductive failures, nucleus herd concept, genetic improvement plan etc.
- Feeding management- nutrient requirement based on age, weight and production status, least cost feed (green and dry roughages, concentrate and supplement), formulation, transition feeding, forage calendar and year-round green grass availability, Silage, TMR, UMMB, water requirement, chaffing etc.
- Health management-major diseases: causes, symptoms, diagnosis, prevention and control; vaccination calendar, internal parasite management, biosecurity, sample collection and dispatch etc.
- Overall management: calf care and management, colostrum feeding, hoof cutting, pre and post calving care, handling extreme weather conditions etc.
- Climate smart sustainable practices -biogas production, manure and urine management, heat stress management (fogger/water sprinkle, dairy fan) etc.
- Farm record management: importance of record keeping, formats for manual / digital record keeping etc.
- Clean and hygienic milk production, GMP (milk collection, transportation, quality control), mastitis control etc.
- Role of Social Entrepreneurs Women Dairy Cooperative and Business Development Services (BDS).
- Model dairy farm concept picture, milking machine, Farmers Field School (FFS), Dairy Training Center, Milk Collection Center, Milk Analyzer, Milk Pricing System etc.
- Nutritional value and health benefits of milk consumption.
- Passing on the Gift concept and importance.
- Summary of Milky Way program.
- Animal Transport- air and road -Passing on the Gifts from S. Korea to Nepal.
- Good Dairy Husbandry Practices [housing, feeding, breeding, health, stress management etc.] D
- Prepare sketch, table, photographs that align with the flip chart scripts /content.
- Submit a draft version of Flip Chart for review and feedback.
- Submit the final digital Version of Flip Chart in "ready to print" format.
- Provide 2 colored printed hard copies of Flip Chart as samples.
Timeframe:3 months from signing of the contract.
Deliverables:
Scripts/ content and Final MDV color Flip Chart in Nepali language, formatted and ready for printing, along with 2 color printed hard copies
Eligibility:
The consulting firm should compose of the following team members with at least 10 years of experience of producing similar materials in the past.
- Livestock Expert (Content/script writer)
- Designer/Sketcher/ fine artist
- Evaluation Criteria: Understanding of the project scope and objectives, Proposed methodology and approach, Relevant experience, qualifications and older projects, Cost-effectiveness of the proposal.
