 Preparation of Training Curricula and Manuals on Improved Dairy Technology and Practices

Background:

Heifer Project International Nepal (HPIN) in collaboration with Heifer Korea, Department of Livestock Services (DLS), National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) and Nepal Agricultural Research Council (NARC) is implementing a signature program “Milky Way-Transforming Dairy Sector of Nepal”. The overall goal of the Milky Way Signature Program is to support 500,000 dairy farmers’ families in their pathway to achieve living income. It has envisioned three interlinked pathways to achieve the goal. 

Pathway 1 being led by HPIN and supported by DLS is working to establish a Model Dairy Village (MDV) as a “Center of Excellence and Learning” reinforcing the local dairy sector to make it more efficient, more profitable for smallholder dairy producers (particularly for women) and more respectful of the environment. It will also serve as resource center for high genetic worth HF dairy cattle and knowledge and technologies. Pathway 2 being led by DLS and supported by HPIN particular focusing on the reinforcement of national and local capacities to guarantee availability of better genetic material for dairy purpose. Pathway 3 focuses on addressing the challenges of the national dairy ecosystem in order to build an enabling business and regulatory environment 

Objectives:

To disseminate improved dairy technology and practices from MDV Sindhuli throughout the country, it is essential to build the capacity of dairy value chain actors, including dairy producers, cooperatives, service providers, and public agency staff nationwide. Therefore, appropriate training curricula, content, and manuals targeted to these value chain actors need to be developed for improving dairy animal productivity/ profitability and improve quality of produce throughout the dairy pocket areas of the country. We aim to develop a comprehensive, structured training program that includes well-designed curricula, detailed contents, and a user-friendly training manual.

Scope of Work:

The scope of work for this assignment will be as follows: 

  1. Visit the Model Dairy Village Sindhuli and interact with project staffs, dairy farmers, and cooperatives, gaining a clear understanding of the improved dairy technologies and practices they are adopting.
  2. Review existing dairy training curriculum, manuals, and dairy related extension materials targeted to producers and dairy cooperatives, available at national and international level.
  3. Develop tailer-made training curriculum in alignment with government-approved dairy training standards.  
  4. Design user friendly training manual for Training of Trainers (ToT) that resource persons / trainers can use as a reference guide while delivering dairy related trainings aimed at smallholder dairy farmers and dairy cooperatives."
  5. Develop detail course content for each topic under the specified TOT and other dairy trainings. 
  6. Include step-by-step procedures, illustrative examples, and practical tips in the training manual and contents, and incorporate diagrams, charts, and images, where appropriate.
  7. Submit the draft version of training curricula, topics, contents and manual of each training. 
  8. Incorporate the suggestion by external expert/ Heifer team members.
  9. Submit the final digital version in ready to print format.
  10. Submit two hard colored copies as samples. 

Trainings envisioned

A. ToT Training

  1. ToT Training on Climate smart good dairy husbandry practices and management. 
  2. ToT Training on GMP, Product Diversification and BDS (Business Development Services)

B. Farmers' Level Training on Climate smart good dairy husbandry practices and management.

  1. Climate smart Good Dairy Husbandry Practices [housing, feeding, breeding, health, stress management, farm data recording and analysis etc.] 
  2. Clean and Hygienic Milk Production/ Mastitis control
  3. Business Development Training at Farm Level

C. Cooperative Level Training on GMP, product diversification, and Business plan development. 

  1. Good Manufacturing Practices (hygiene and sanitation, milk collection and transportation, Milk testing and quality control, handling and processing, storage and distribution, Inventory management etc.) 
  2. Product Diversification Training [Yoghurt, Paneer, cheese, butter, Ghee, Ice Cream, Candies/ Sweets, dog chew etc. – production/branding/marketing/quality control/business plan]
  3. Business Plan training at Dairy Cooperative Level

Timeline: The assignment is expected to be completed in 4 months after signing agreement

Deliverables:

The consultant will produce the following deliverables in the Nepali language:

  • Tailer-made Dairy Training Curricula of all trainings mentioned above targeted to resource person/trainers, producers, and dairy cooperatives. 
  • Topic Outlines of each training 
  • Training contents: a detailed description of each topic under each training. 
  • Training Manual: A comprehensive, illustrated manual with sections corresponding to the training curricula and topics. 
  • Draft version of training curricula, topics, contents and manual of each training. 
  • Final digital version in ready to print format and 2 hard colored copies as samples. 

Eligibility:

  • The team should comprise the following human resources 
    • Livestock Development Expert with master’s degree in animal science, Veterinary Science 
    • Dairy Expert - master’s degree in Dairy Science/ Dairy Technology
  • Relevant prior experience of working in training center or who have been extensively involved in training delivery.  
  • Proven experience in curriculum design and training manual development related to dairy technology/practices.
  • Expertise in the dairy sector, particularly in animal health, dairy management, rural/agricultural extension, and dairy cooperative. 

Evaluation Criteria: Understanding of the project scope and objectives, Proposed methodology and approach, Relevant experience, qualifications and older projects, Cost-effectiveness of the proposal.
