Strengthening Community Resilience Project

Background

Islamic Relief is an international aid and development charity, which aims to alleviate the suffering of the world's poorest people. It is an independent Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) founded in the UK in 1984.

With an active presence in over 40 countries across the globe, we strive to make the world a better and fairer place for the three billion people still living in poverty. As well as responding to disasters and emergencies, Islamic Relief promotes sustainable economic and social development by working with local communities - regardless of race, religion or gender.

We are signatories to the Grand Bargain, Charter for Change, and the Red Cross Code of Conduct, which sets ethical standards for organizations involved in humanitarian work and commits us to the important principles of impartiality, neutrality and independence. We are also firmly committed to the People in Aid Code of Best Practice. The high quality and impact of our work means we are among only 5 UK-based charities to have been certified against the Core Humanitarian Standard (CHS). As full members of the INGO Accountability Charter, our excellence in transparency, good governance and social responsibility is recognized.

Islamic Relief Worldwide began its operations in Nepal in April 2015 in response to a devastating earthquake that claimed 9,000 lives and left 2.8 million people in need of humanitarian assistance. Since then, Islamic Relief has focused on enhancing community resilience through protection and disaster risk reduction programmes, ensuring access to safe water and sanitation, and supporting food security and livelihood initiatives.

Formally established as a legal entity, Islamic Relief Nepal signed its first General Agreement with the Social Welfare Council on October 13, 2017, followed by its initial project agreement on December 13, 2018. Currently, IR Nepal is actively implementing six projects in six districts—Bara, Rautahat, Sarlahi, Mahottari, Kapilvastu, and Rupandehi in two provinces (Madesh and Lumbini)—through collaboration with six local implementing partners (Bagmati Welfare Society (BWSN), Sarlahi Nepal, Lumbini Integrated Development Organization (LIDO), Kapilvastu Nepal, Jan Jagaran Youth Club (JJYC), Bara Nepal, Dalit Society Welfare Community Nepal (DSWCN), Mahottari Nepal and Rural Development Centre (RDC), Rautahat District Nepal and SOSEC Nepal (Jajarkot).

About Project

Strengthening Community Resilience Project was launched in July 2022 and targets two municipalities (Mahagadhimai Municipality and Subarna Rural Municipality) of the Bara district.

The project is aimed to improve wellbeing, food security, WASH and resilience among poorest households affected by the climate-induced disaster in Bara district in Province 2 of Nepal. This will be achieved through three interconnected outcomes.

  1. Vulnerable households have improved food security, income, and resilience.
  2. Public, families, and children understand protection issues and improved preventive and responsive protection mechanisms.
  3. Children and their families continue to use basic or improved latrines and sanitation practices and use reliable and safe drinking water sources.

The project aims to promote climate adaptive technologies/practices and climate risk awareness to enhance agriculture production and entrepreneurship development for women and youths will help to improve food security and provide sustained income for 700 poor families (Total achievement against the target: 798 HHs that include 400 farmers, 282 rightsholders managing small businesses, 116 rightsholders managing livestock (goat) farming).  Improving the skills of local Government technical services and farmer groups regarding the analytic understanding of climate change, its impacts and the identification of possible adaptation measures will build resilient livelihoods against the impacts of climate change.

Also, the expansion of safe drinking water and sanitation coverage through construction/rehabilitation of safe drinking water and sanitation structures in addition to community-led total sanitation campaign will improve knowledge, attitude and practices on WASH among the targeted communities.
