the project: Scaling-up Extreme Poverty Graduation and Climate Change Resilience in Disaster Vulnerable Communities in Asia (SCALING-UP GRADUATION & RESILIENCE IN ASIA)

1. Background:

Scaling-up Extreme Poverty Graduation and Climate Change Resilience in Disaster Vulnerable Communities in Asia (SCALING-UP GRADUATION & RESILIENCE IN ASIA) is a 4-year project funded by Islamic Relief USA. The project focuses on expanding efforts to address extreme poverty and enhance climate change resilience in disaster-prone communities. It is currently being implemented in Haripur Municipality, Sarlahi district, and Balwa Municipality, Mahottari district, within Madhes Province, Nepal. Local partnerships are key to its success, with Bagmati Welfare Society Nepal (BWSN) and Dalit Society Welfare Committee Nepal (DSWCN) playing integral roles for its successful implementation.

The project aims to benefit 9,931 rights-holders directly and 28,351 people indirectly. Among the direct beneficiaries, approximately 50% are women, and a majority come from ethnic minorities such as Dalit and Muslim communities. Further, ultra poor families will receive training in vocational and business skills, along with necessary support, to pursue viable small-scale business opportunities (both on and off-farm) that align with current market demand.

The project aims for improved Living condition, livelihoods and reduced vulnerability to climate change in Mahottari and Sarlahi districts through capacity building, supported by advocacy and scaling-up of poverty graduation, adaptation technologies and innovations. To achieve this impact, the project aims to deliver the following outcomes:

  1. Enhanced resilient livelihood with increased income, assets & social development of the targeted families and communities.
  2. Strengthened community level resilience to disaster and climate change impact
  3. Strengthened system and capacities of the national and provincial level institutions and stakeholders on disaster and climate resilience and scaling-up Locally Led Adaptation (LLA) mechanisms
  4. Strengthened IR in-country, regional and global level capacity on innovation and learning sharing and scaling-up Poverty Graduation, Disaster Risk and Climate Resilience initiatives.

The Livelihood and Market System Assessment will support the project team in effectively implementing the project. Furthermore, its findings will aid in identifying and understanding relevant and viable livelihood opportunities for ultra-poor families based on market demand. The study will also serve as a reference for monitoring the impact of income-generating activities on food security and climate smart practices among rights holders in the project. Additionally, the assessment will inform and encourage farmers and business owners to invest in, adopt, and replicate viable small-scale income generation opportunities.
