Teaching Fellows

UWS Nepal

UWS Nepal is a charity dedicated to improving educational opportunities for underprivileged children. We started operations in 2015 as a non-profit, the same year our country witnessed a 7.8 magnitude earthquake. Post-earthquake UWS Nepal has constructed 536 earthquake-resistant classrooms across 216 communities, educating 14,867 students in our Sankhuwasabha, Gulmi, Bhojpur and Taplejung districts. We aim to provide quality education to all children, and to reach that goal; we work to improve educational opportunities for children living in marginalized communities and remote regions. Our education transformation philosophy is maintained by developing and introducing child-friendly pedagogies that allow for more significant innovation in the classroom and greater engagement between the in-class lessons and real life, parents-teacher relationship, and harmonized relationship between local government and local communities in a shared mission to ensure a future for children in the communities where we work.

Organisational Background

UWS Nepal is a charity dedicated to providing quality education to children in remote rural villages through modern teaching and learning methods. Since starting in late 2015, we have built 78 schools in Sankhuwasabha, Taplejung, Bhojpur and Gulmi, enrolling 14,867 children.

We ensure quality education by creating need-based curricula and using innovative, research-based teaching methods that connect classroom lessons to real life. Our focus on building essential infrastructure, like schools and Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) facilities, supports our commitment to empowering young women in marginalised communities and investing in girls’ education for better futures. Currently, we are working in 26 municipalities in Sankhuwasabha, Gulmi, Bhojpur and Taplejung, with plans to expand in the coming year.

Role Summary

The UWS Nepal Fellowship Program, started in 2017, is a two-year long initiative aimed at improving the quality of education and addressing educational inequality in hard-to-reach and under-resourced communities of Nepal. The fellowship program offers Nepali youths an opportunity to gain experience as educators and in community action to make a real impact on the lives of children in hard-to-reach regions of Nepal.

The program aims to tackle the issues of substandard education environments in hard to reach regions by placing a trained UWS Fellow in UWS Nepal-aided community schools whilst providing an opportunity for young Nepali graduates to go through a transformative leadership development journey.
