Institute of Himalayan Risk Reduction (IHRR) is an organization established with an objective to assess and understand the risk to contribute to sustainability. Complying with the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction(SFDRR), IHRR envisions to understand the risk and application of interdisciplinary knowledge with Science, Engineering, Technology and Innovation to contribute for risk reduction and bridging of academic research with professionals and policymakers for sustainability. The team consists of professionals with expertise and experiences in the field of disaster risk management in understanding the risk, conducting academic research, and field-level implementations in Nepal and different parts of the world.

The 2025 Planetary Health: Field Lab is an interdisciplinary, field-based learning experience designed for undergraduate students from diverse academic backgrounds, including environment, engineering, humanities, and health sciences. By traversing Nepal’s diverse climate zones, Nepali undergraduate students will gain firsthand experience of the acute impacts of climate change and the pressing need for sustainable solutions.
As a part of Flagship Program of Institute of Himalayan Risk Reduction (IHRR), the Field Lab is being organized in collaboration with Duke University, Duke Kunshan University, and member universities of the Himalayan University Consortium (HUC).
The Himalayan Planetary Field Lab highlights the critical need for students to understand the acute impacts of climate change on health, and the diverse climate zones of Nepal provide an excellent natural laboratory.
Date: 16th May to 7th June 2025 (Field Expedition + Pre-Trip Planning)

Eligibility Criteria:
- Must be a Nepali Citizen
- Must be currently enrolled in the final year of undergraduate program related to Public Health, Environmental science, Engineering, Geography, Geology, Disaster risk reduction, Agriculture, Sociology or any relevant Field
- Proficiency in English (written and spoken) is required for effective participation.
- Must be available to attend the entire 3.5-week program without interruptions. Recommendation Letter from the College or No Objection Letter would be prioritized.
- Participants should be willing to meaningfully contribute to the program by producing (Video Experience, Article Reflecting their field experience, A short video blog (vlog) capturing key moments or learnings, A reflective report or field diary Community engagement documentation)
- Demonstrated interest in [relevant themes, e.g., climate resilience, field research, community engagement].
- Able to participate in physically active fieldwork, including walking, hiking, and staying in remote locations.
