The Centre for Mental Health and Counselling – Nepal (CMC-Nepal), a national-level NGO dedicated to promoting mental health and psychosocial well-being, is pleased to announce an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Psychosocial Coordinator and Psychosocial Counsellor under the Empowered Women Prosperous Nepal (EWPN) project and GBV Prevention and Response Phase II Project. Both the projects are supported by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) which aim to empower women and promote gender equality in Nepal in 18 districts across four provinces— Sudurpachhim, Karnali, Madesh and Koshi. CMC-Nepal focuses its activities in those projects in enhancing access to mental health and psychosocial support services for women and girls, particularly those affected by gender-based violence (GBV) and other forms of adversity.

Position Overview:

Under the direct supervision of the Program Coordinator/Psychosocial Expert, the Psychosocial Coordinator based in Madesh Province will be responsible for overall psychosocial response activities of Madesh Province. The incumbent will substantially contribute to the effective implementation of the Empowered Women Prosperous Nepal (सशक्त महिला, समृद्ध नेपाल) project activities in the province.  The Psychosocial Coordinator will play a vital role in mentoring and supervising psychosocial counsellors and case managers for effective psychosocial counselling, support and care to the survivors of gender-based violence. The person in this position will closely work with a multidisciplinary team, including Health Coordinator, will empower survivors to heal, rebuild their lives, and access the resources they need to live meaningfully. S/he bridges the gap between the Field and the Kathmandu team to ensure smooth operation of the project and provide necessary guidance to the field staff (CPSW, Case Managers and Psychosocial Counsellors) based in each province/local level to ensure timely and high-quality delivery of EWPN’s programmatic intervention. S\he offers mentoring/ supervision, guidance and support, and further the person in this position will ensure the functional coordination at provincial level for smooth functioning of the project, as well as strengthening psychosocial and care activities, shelter and other required responses to the GBV survivors.     

Duties and responsibilities for the position:

  • Training, mentoring and providing supervision to the psychosocial counsellors and case managers in psychosocial counselling and management of GBV survivors
  • Conduct field-level backstopping supervision to the case managers at OCMCs and community on individual cases, and provide psychosocial counselling to more difficult clients together with case managers and PS counsellors during field-level supervision visits.
  • Provide distance coaching to case managers/psychosocial counsellors working at OCMCs and community 
  • Supervise and work together with the case managers and PS counsellors for the psychosocial intervention of the GBV survivors in individual or group setting on the nature of the problem and choosing the best setting that works for the best interest of the survivor.
  • Support in documentation of psychosocial counselling service provided by case managers and psychosocial counsellors (case analysis documents, psychosocial intervention plan, session note, progress checklist, exit pole interview, referral for other services etc.).  
  • Assess the situation for cases who need specialized mental health service and extend coordination in higher-level mental health service facilities or psychiatrists reaching community-level mental health service points for the immediate intervention 
  • Participate in the regular review and planning meetings with the government and or partners as and when necessary and present/ share project activities on a monthly/ quarterly basis.
  • Work closely with the local level to create policies to prevent and respond to gender-based violence and institutionalize mechanisms for prevention and response.
  • Ensure that all the planned activities of psychosocial intervention are implemented in the project district as per the approved work plan 
  • Prepare and submit comprehensive field visit reports and reports of implemented project interventions on time and in line with required quality standards. 
  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams and community stakeholders to ensure holistic support for clients

Qualification and experience requirements:

  • Master’s degree in psychology or counselling psychology or mental health social work or master degree in any discipline with PGD in Counselling from recognized university with two years of experience as a psychosocial supervisor under close supervision from expert clinical psychologists/ psychologists.  
  • At least two years of working experience as a psychosocial supervisor or psychologist, working with GBV survivors, migrant workers conflict-affected people in disaster situations or COVID-19 pandemic situation 
  • Having strong experience in conducting training in psychosocial counselling and supervision of psychosocial counsellors, community psychosocial workers and other developmental actors 
  • Having good comprehension and learning attitude in psychosocial interventions
  • Practical and strong background in supervising psychosocial counselling skills of counsellors and health workers. At least two years of practice in supervising local psychosocial counsellors and health workers will be an advantage for the post.  
  • Strong knowledge about GBV and its causes and consequences, along with social norms
  • Demonstrate ability to work in multi-sectoral approach and establish harmonious and effective working relationships both within and outside the organization.
  • Willingness to undertake field visits in difficult conditions.
