Heifer Project Nepal (HPN) is a non-profit, humanitarian organization dedicated to ending hunger and poverty and caring for earth by providing livestock, education, and other resources to help poor families become self-reliant. HPN invites applications from eligible Nepali citizens for the following position:
Senior Project Officer -Livestock Technology and One Health- 1
Function:
The Senior Project Officer – Livestock Technology and One Health, will lead efforts to develop and implement innovative technologies across the dairy value chain, focusing on dairy animal health, breeding, and management at the field level. S/he will provide diagnostic services, clinical care, and treatment for dairy animals while promoting Good Husbandry Practices (GHP) among dairy farmers in Kamalamai Municipality, Sindhuli, as part of the strengthening Model Dairy Village (MDV) initiative. The officer will work with the Milky Way project team, local implementing partner, local government, private sectors, and international experts to improve dairy animal productivity, health, and welfare through scientific and evidence-based approaches. This role requires working closely with academic and research institutions in research and development and generating new knowledge in all domains of dairy development.
Educational Qualifications and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in veterinary science and animal Husbandry from a recognized university, with a minimum of five (5) years of experience as a veterinarian or dairy clinician, or a master’s degree in veterinary science from a recognized university, with at least three (3) years of relevant experience.
- Other job-related education and/or experience may be substituted for all or part of these basic requirement
Preferred Requirements:
- Experience in diagnosing dairy animal diseases at the field level, based on history, signs, and symptoms, including sample collection and laboratory examination.
- In-depth technical knowledge and practical skills in treating dairy animals, ranging from minor to complex cases.
- Experience in performing both minor and major surgical procedures on dairy animals.
- Proficiency in reproductive physiology, including AI services, pregnancy diagnosis (manual and ultrasound), and managing infertility cases such as repeat breeding, pyometra, and anestrus.
- Demonstrated experience in community mobilization, social capital development, institutional development, capacity building, training, smallholder farmers/rural SMEs/co-ops, and base of the pyramid consumers
- Strong interpersonal and people management skills
Project Officer-Pedigree Performance Recording Scheme (PPRS) data management – 1
Function:
The Program Officer- PPRS Data Management will oversee the management of accurate and up-to-date records on the performance of dairy animals in the Model Dairy Village (MDV), Kamalamai Municipality, Sindhuli. The role involves strengthening the capacity of dairy farmers in both manual and digital data recording, as well as providing regular follow-ups and technical support. The officer will oversee the timely collection and reporting of data in line with established protocols, with an emphasis on consistency and accuracy. The data will be used not only to enhance dairy enterprises at the household level in the MDV but also to select high genetic merit cattle, contributing to the national cattle genetic improvement program. The officer will work in close collaboration with the Milky Way project team, the Kamalamai Social Entrepreneur Women Dairy Cooperative, and local government to develop and implement a sustainable system for PPRS data management of dairy animals in the MDV.
Qualifications And Skills:
- A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in agriculture, Veterinary Science, Business Development, or a related field from a recognized university, along with at least three (3) years of relevant work experience.
- Other job-related education and/or experience may be substituted for all or part of these basic requirement
- Demonstrated experience in accurate data recording, compilation, and analysis, preferably in the livestock or agriculture sector.
- Proficiency in data recording and management tools, with familiarity in software such as Excel or livestock management systems
