Blind Youth Association Nepal

Blind Youth Association Nepal (BYAN) is a non-political, non-religious, not-for-profit Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) established by blind and partially sighted (BPS) youth in Nepal. It was founded in 2011, registered with the District Administration Office in Kathmandu in 2012, and affiliated with the Social Welfare Council of Nepal. It is the only organization established by BPS youth in Nepal. Currently, BYAN has more than 500 members, organized into 10 district chapters located in Jhapa, Morang, Bara, Kathmandu, Chitwan, Kaski, Rupandehi, Banke, Surkhet, and Kailali districts. Memberships and chapter expansion are ongoing. As a rights-based organization, BYAN intends to play a proactive role in formulating, amending, and implementing legal provisions related to youths with disabilities. It also focuses on organizing and capacity-building of youths with disabilities across the country. BYAN has strong networking and cooperation with different government and non-government stakeholders working in various domains of disability. Additionally, BYAN is a member of the National Federation of the Disabled-Nepal (NFDN), which serves as the umbrella organization for organizations of persons with disabilities (OPDs) in the country.

Background:

Blind Youth Association is an organization established by the Blind and Partially Sighted Youth of Nepal. With the vision of ‘BPS people of Nepal enjoying dignified life in an inclusive society’ BYAN is currently working in the area of policy advocacy, education, employment disaster risk reduction, political participation and SRHR of persons with disabilities in general and BPS in particular. BYAN is currently carrying out a Project named “Action for Change: An initiative for the promotion of inclusive SRH and FP services for persons with disabilities and strengthened movement” in partnership with CBM global disability inclusion.

As part of our commitment to transparency, accountability, and continuous improvement, we are seeking applications from the firms for conducting the television program.

Introduction

Sexual and reproductive health rights (SRHR) are fundamental human rights that encompass the right to access information and services related to sexual health, family planning, and reproductive health. For persons with disabilities, these rights are often overlooked or inadequately addressed due to societal stigmas, lack of accessible services, and insufficient education.

Current Context

Nepal has made significant strides in promoting the rights of persons with disabilities, but there remain substantial gaps, especially in the domain of sexual and reproductive health rights. Many persons with disabilities face barriers in accessing information and services, leading to poor health outcomes and a lack of autonomy over their bodies and reproductive choices. It is essential to bridge this gap through targeted information dissemination and awareness programs.

Objective of the assignment:

  • To create awareness about SRHR issues faced by persons with disabilities.
  • To educate the public on the rights and needs of persons with disabilities concerning SRHR.
  • To promote inclusive practices and policies that support the SRHR of persons with disabilities.
  • To highlight personal stories and experiences to humanize and give voice to persons with disabilities.
  • Promote inclusive practices and policies that support the SRHR of Persons with disabilities.

Scope of Work:

The selected firm will be responsible for the following tasks:

  • Research and development of content related to SRHR and disability.
  • Production of educational segments, interviews, documentaries, and panel discussions.
  • Engagement with experts, activists, and persons with disabilities.
  • Broadcasting the program on a national television network and making it available on digital platforms.
  • Ensuring accessibility features such as sign language interpretation and subtitles.

Deliverables:

The deliverables for this assignment include:

  • Production and post-production of a minimum number of episodes (e.g.,4 episodes having minimum 25 minutes screen time). 
  • Final broadcast-ready episodes.
  • Report on viewership statistics and impact assessment.

Qualifications:

Interested firms or individuals should possess the following qualifications:

  • Proven experience in television production, particularly in creating content on social issues.
  • National level television.
  • Demonstrated understanding of SRHR and disability issues.
  • Ability to create inclusive and accessible content.
  • Experience in working with persons with disabilities and relevant organizations.

Required Documents for Submitting Proposal for Firms:

  • A cover letter expressing interest in the project.
  • Concept note for the television program.
  • Budget breakdown per episode for project.
  • Portfolio showcasing previous relevant work.
  • CVs of the production team and key personnel.
