USAID Biodiversity (Jal Jangal) will conserve nature, enhance human well-being, and safeguard Nepal’s biodiversity to improve the health of ecosystems, fight environmental crime, and improve the ability of communities to prepare for and adapt to impacts caused by climate change and natural disasters. The activity will achieve measurable conservation targets within the biodiversity-rich, terrestrial, and freshwater ecosystems in and around the Chitwan-Annapurna Landscape, Kailash Sacred Landscape, Terai Arc Landscape, and the proposed Karnali Conservation Landscape while increasing resilience to climate change and contributing to the inclusive and sustainable development of the Nepali people. To accomplish this, USAID Biodiversity (Jal Jangal) will implement activities aligned with three mutually interrelated and reinforcing objectives: Improve the health of ecosystems (Objective 1), Strengthen environmental crime control and natural resource safeguards (Objective 2), and enhance the climate resilience of natural and human systems (Objective 3).
1. Objectives of the assignment
The Driver will provide transportation services for the USAID Biodiversity (Jal Jangal) activity in accordance with USAID and DAI Global policies, procedures, and guidelines. Additionally, the Driver will provide guidance on the performance of vehicles and ensure that the vehicles are roadworthy at all times. The Driver will be responsible for transporting USAID Biodiversity (Jal Jangal) staff for all program-related activities, including field visits, meetings, airport pick-ups and drop-offs, and other duties as required by the activity. This position will work with the Logistics and Operations staff and others on the activity team and DAI Global home office to ensure that project activities are delivered on time and adhere to USAID and DAI Global compliance requirements, global standards, and national policies.
2. Tasks & Responsibilities
- Transport staff and consultants in a comfortable, safe, and timely manner on official duties and/or business within and outside of Pokhara, as requested by the supervisor.
- Map out driving routes ahead of time to determine the most expedient trip.
- Carry out office errands, deliveries, and collections as directed.
- Ensure all trips are approved and properly recorded in the logbook and ensure regular communication with the immediate supervisor.
- Ensure compliance with the organization’s vehicle driving policies.
- Listen to traffic and weather reports to stay up to date on road conditions and adjust the route to avoid heavy traffic or road constructions, as needed.
- Ensure Vehicles are clean and comfortable for all riders.
- Actively monitor the mechanical conditions of the vehicle, and arrange regular vehicle maintenance including checking oil, water, battery, brakes, tires, etc.
- Check that vehicles are properly insured and that all road licenses/taxes are valid.
- Prepare and submit monthly vehicle fuel/maintenance costs reports and track all vehicle expenses.
- Report all vehicle faults and request for maintenance as appropriate.
- Ensure compliance with government laws on driving speed, parking, and other road safety regulations.
- Ensure that the office directory, map of the city/country, first aid kit, necessary spare parts, and other required items are always available within the vehicle.
- Ensure the vehicle is always kept secure, clean, tidy, and in good working condition.
- Support administrative functions as assigned by the supervisor.
- Maintain high standards of customer service to guests.
- Any other duties as may be assigned from time to time.
3. Qualifications
- For a candidate with a High School (PCL/+2) diploma 9 years of professional work experience is required, for a candidate with a SLC with 11 years of relevant technical experience is required. (Subtract one year of relevant experience –8 years with High School diploma or 10 years with SLC – for persons of excluded groups)
- At least 9 years of work experience as a driver. Preference will be given to applicants, with USAID or other donor project experience.
- Able to communicate in English and Nepali
- Excellent driving record.
- Good sense of geography, directions, and locations
- Valid local driver’s license for two and four-wheeled vehicles
- Willingness to travel frequently within the country.
- Experienced in driving in difficult terrains. Ability to check road conditions before departure for safety precautions.
- Able to maintain good working relationships with team members while retaining high levels of confidentiality and discretion.
Travel: Travel within Nepal may be required to support USAID Biodiversity (Jal Jangal) activities and events.
