Since 1987, WaterAid Nepal (WAN) is contributing at national and sub-national level focusing on sustainable and safe water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) through system strengthening, strategic partnerships, capacity building, and evidence-based advocacy. WaterAid uses innovative technology to overcome challenges, working with Nepal’s natural landscape, and share expertise so more people can benefit. 

Background

WaterAid Nepal seeks a research / academic institutions, NGOs or other relevant parties to conduct situation analysis on WASH in Madhesh Province for MEGA proposition. Building on The Beacon Project, one of WAN’s legacy projects, this programme aims to scale up universal access to WASH from Lahan Municipality to Madhesh Province and beyond in close coordination with all 3 (federal. provincial, local) tires of governments. Within 5 years, it will address key areas for sustainable development, enhance inclusive, disaster and climate resilient WASH, integrating WASH across various sectors for improved quality of life and sustainable impact to achieve SDG 6. WAN is planning to extend its programme areas in Madhesh Province, therefore, seeking a consultancy service from the team of individuals/firms to situation analysis on WASH in Madhesh Province for MEGA proposition. 

Competency required: 

• Knowledge on various data collection methods including the structed observation at various settings. Team should have a multidimensional team with technical, social and research expertise. Team of experts with master's degree (PhD preferred) in development studies, social science, environment science/management/engineering or water, sanitation engineering or relevant fields with extensive experiences on undertaking programme scoping studies or similar assignments in WASH.  
• Proven competency of working similar types of studies with good quality outcomes and recommendation using different social and technical research tools and techniques with very good understanding of technical and socio-cultural dimensions of Madhesh. 
• Proven knowledge and experience of conducting situational analysis, GEDSI analysis, barrier analysis and needs assessment, stakeholder mapping and community consultations, partners scoping and selection. 
• Sound understanding of integrated water resource management, watershed management, source protection, water security, WASH governance, WASH rights, WASH planning, sustainable, inclusive, resilient WASH, best water supply management model. 
• Ability to collect or extract data/info from various sources, collate, analyse and produce a quality report. Excellent data analysis, research and report writing skills in English and Nepali experience in the participatory and qualitative research methodology preferably in WASH. Research publications related to best water supply management models would be advantage. 
• Excellent skills in conducting FGD, KII and stakeholder consultation (data collection, recording and analysis) to the field researcher, and ensure the quality of their work. 
• Ability to manage the study team, their field work plan, and provide support on the methodology and use of research tools. 
• Knowledge on hydrological modelling, HEC-RAS (inundation mapper), geographic information system (GIS), statistical tools like SPSS, R – studio would be advantage.
