Summary of Position

Other reporting responsibilities and internal cooperation parties: 

Nepal Country Office (NEPCO), Senior Management Team (SMT), Program Team, Finance & Admin Team, FCA’s headquarter in Helsinki: “Service and Accountability Centre (SAC)” Grants Unit, Thematic Advisors, Institutional and Private Donors, Consortium Partners, private sector actors. 

Primary Purpose of the Position

The Business Development Manager (BDM) is responsible for identifying and securing funding opportunities by leading the development of high-quality concept notes and proposals that align with FCA’s strategic priorities for Nepal and globally. The BDM will manage donor relationships, negotiate funding agreements, and support capacity building in project design and resource mobilization for both staff and partners.

Description

Main Tasks

Business Development and Resource Mobilization 

  • Develop and implement a strategic business development plan in coordination with SMT and SAC Grants Unit.
  • Research, monitor, identify, map and prioritize new business/funding opportunities, including Calls for Proposals, at national, regional, and international levels.
  • Work proactively towards developing strategic alliances, consortium formation and partnerships for joint proposals, and planning and negotiating with partners on joint proposals.
  • Ensure timely submission of high-quality proposals and manage follow-ups.
  • Lead donor negotiations and relationship-building with key donors.
  • Plan and execute capacity building of FCA staff and partners in proposal development and project design.

Strategic External Relations

  • Explore diverse donors and develop engagement strategies and plans.
  • Establish and develop strategic partnerships with key stakeholders, including embassies, bilateral donors, UN agencies, foundations, corporates, and likeminded INGOs, in alignment with FCA’s Nepal Country Strategy.
  • Develop communication products in collaboration with the NEPCO Communication Officer and SAC Communication Unit.
  • Facilitate NEPCO team participation in strategic engagement with funding agencies and prospect partners.
  • Represent FCA in donor meetings and information sessions to gather intelligence on funding opportunities.

Grants Management and Donor Compliances

  • Collaborate with SMT, Program Team, SAC Grants Unit, and partners to ensure compliance and quality grant management throughout the project cycle.
  • Ensure all submissions meet donor guidelines and are of high quality.
  • Ensure timely, compliant, and appropriate communication with donors.
  • Lead capacity building of FCA staff and partners on donor compliance and grants management.
  • Manage and coordinate donor visits.

Communications and Knowledge Sharing

  • Support the development of fundraising, communication and visibility materials in collaboration with relevant teams.
  • Share key information, learnings, and updates across the organization using appropriate platforms.
  • Promote knowledge sharing through debriefs, workshops, and team sessions.
  • Contribute towards effective communication flow within the Country Office and across FCA.

Competence, Experience, Skills, Knowledge Needed

  • 10 years of experience in the development sector, preferably in INGO(s), whereof minimum 2 years at manager level and 3 years’ experience in business development.  
  • Experience of working with development, humanitarian and/or advocacy programs in Nepal with a Rights-Based Approach (RBA). 
  • Strong knowledge and experience of donor’s relationship, priorities and compliance mechanisms.
  • Successful experience with private sector donor will have an added value. 
  • Excellent analytical skills with strong understanding of logical framework, theory of change.  
  • Excellent planning and proposal development ability, with strong expertise on project design and log frames, including experience of developing project budgets. 
  • Good understanding of result-based management, project cycle management.
  • Excellent interpersonal, facilitation, communication, negotiation and networking skills and team-working attitude.
  • Excellent writing skills, good attention to detail and highly numerate.
  • Gender sensitive and responsive.
  • Good organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to work independently under pressure in an organized and responsive manner. 
  • Excellent communication skills in English and Nepali.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, graphics presentations and other relevant applications.

  • Enhanced visibility of FCA in Nepal and strengthened relationships with relevant stakeholders and donors.
  • Successful mobilization of resources for FCA’s Nepal Country Programme and its partner-implemented projects. 

Responsibilities and Independence 

  • The tasks require independency and sometimes responsibility in preparing problem solutions, and also making decisions. The position holder works as a specialist of a sub-sector of function. The work may include demanding responsibility for operations, finances or personnel.

Physical and Psychological Burden Imposed 

  • Nepal is a high-risk country.
  • Frequent travel to field locations.
  • Instability (political).
  • Fraud and corruption threats.

Interaction Needed 

  • Donor and other strategic stakeholders such as embassies, Government of Nepal, and networks.
  • Participation in FCA global coordination group for grants and fundraising. 
  • FCA SAC and NEPCO colleagues. 
  • FCA’s implementing partners. 

Substitution and Representation 

  • Acting as OiC while CD is not available.
  • Representing FCA in different forums/events nationally and internationally. 
  • Forum and donor meetings.
